Modern Muskoka Cottage
A FRESH TAKE ON TIMELESS COMFORT
Tucked in the heart of cottage country, this once dark and dated retreat has been thoughtfully reimagined into a bright, modern sanctuary—while still honouring the original charm of its timber frame structure. The transformation is nothing short of breathtaking.
Our client’s vision was clear: breathe new life into their cherished family cottage.
Having trusted us with previous projects, they felt confident handing over the reins—returning only once the work was complete.
The original main floor was weighed down by dark, heavy finishes that didn’t reflect the surrounding natural beauty. We opened up the space with a soft, neutral palette, layered textures, and clean-lined furnishings that highlight the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams.
With a deep respect for the home’s architecture, we set out to modernize the main floor, reconfigure the staircase, and refresh the upper guest bedrooms, bathrooms, and primary suite.
The most striking change? This staircase. Once a split, bulky feature that disrupted the flow, it was replaced with a single, streamlined stairwell.
We introduced a bold new bridge (catwalk) on the upper level, creating a dramatic architectural moment and a stronger sense of connection between spaces.
The dining area, previously enclosed and traditional, was reimagined with a refined sensibility.
By opening the space, introducing modern lighting and contemporary art, and pairing light walls with the clients’ warm wood table and deep leather chairs, we created a room that balances cottage charm with quiet sophistication. It now feels both intimate and expansive—ideal for family dinners or lakeside entertaining.
The bathrooms were similarly transformed. Out went the dated dark finishes; in came crisp whites, bold contrasts, warm wood tones, and natural textures.
Matte black fixtures add definition and depth, while updated layouts significantly improved functionality.
This renovation transformed the cottage into a space as stylish as it is welcoming, blending rustic charm with contemporary design. Whether by the fire or enjoying the breeze through floor-to-ceiling windows, the home feels ready for every season and guest.
